Important

According to the Korea Customs website1, If you are importing medical devices, or food, you may need to obtain a specific import license or certificate from the relevant authorities.

For other products, you may not need a license, but you still need to submit an import declaration form and other required documents to the Korea Customs Service (KCS) through their online system, UNI-PASS.

Imports

  • The importer must have a valid importer code from Customs Authority
  • Imported goods must conform to licensed activities of the importer
  • Imported goods must be accompanied with a Bill of Lading / Air Waybill, a Commercial Invoice, a Certificate of Origin, and a Packing List
  • HS Codes must be stated clearly on the Commercial Invoice.

 

Import Duties and Fees

  • The customs valuation is based on CIF (Cost, Insurance and Freight) which means that the amount used to assess customs duty is the sum of cost of gods, insurance and shipping cost to Korea South
  • Customs tariff applicable on imported goods depend on HS Codes
  • Customs duties vary from 0% – 40% is levied on CIF value
  • The standard rate of VAT imposed on imported goods

  • Original of the Certificate of Origin
  • Packing List

Exports

Exporters need to include the following documents with their goods:

  1. Original Commercial Invoice
  2. Customs Declaration if goods’ value is above KRW 2,230,600 (equivalent to USD 2,000).
  3. For certain goods, a strategic export license is required.
