If you’re importing goods worth more than NZ$1,000, you need a client code and a supplier code. You’ll also need to register for the Trade Single Window (TSW)1. Depending on the type of goods you are importing, you may also need to comply with other regulations and requirements from other government agencies.

Imports

General Import Guidelines

  • The importer must have a valid importer code from Customs Authorities
  • Imported goods must conform to licensed activities of the importer
  • Imported goods must be accompanied with an Bill of Lading / Air Waybill, an Original Commercial Invoice, and a Packing List
  • HS Codes must be stated on the Commercial Invoice.

Import Duties and Fees

  • The customs valuation is based on CIF (Cost, Insurance and Freight) which means that the amount used to assess customs duty is the sum of cost of goods, insurance and shipping cost to New Zealand
  • Customs tariff applicable on imported goods depend on HS Codes
  • The standard rate of VAT imposed on imported goods into New Zealand

  • All imported goods will be inspected by Customs Authorities

Exports

Exporters need to include the following documents with their goods:

  1. Original Commercial Invoice
  2. Packing list

  4. For certain goods, export license is required.
